Directing the 12/6 Cable 8 Newscast

with 15 comments

I’ve spent so many hours holed up in an editing suite that sometimes I forget what its like to see the light of day. I finally have got everything off those machines that I want off. I have everything on the internet that I want on the internet. I’m so proud of myself. This was my last day directing and I wish it had been live. I miss it oh so much. For this newscast, the producer and I attempted the very first stand-up open for this semester. It turned out really well, except I don’t think the floor director cued them to the desk when I asked them to be cued. Not sure what happened there. What happens in the studio versus what happens in the control room, is but a mystery. It’s kind of like one of those t-shirts that say, “What happens in the studio, stays in the studio.”

Word of the Year

with 8 comments

I hate to break it to you guys, but ‘w00t’ was so 2002. It has been almost six years since I started saying that word and NOW they like it. That’s okay though. Merriam-Webster Online is always a little behind times when it comes to picking the word of the year.

My top 3 favorite words ever are:

1. globular cluster
2. molecular
3. bodacious

What are yours?

And I Used MSPaint!

leave a comment »

Every instance of ‘the hat man’ from xkcd. I went from the most recent to the very first. It’s quite the change. What intriques me about this character is that I wonder who he is. He’s like a character in The Simpsons, forgets what happens from the previous episode and has a clean slate for the next episode. Same instance here. Same man but different scenerio. I want to know his life story and why he got to be the way he is. He is but, a mystery.

Say Commentable Content Ten Times Fast!*

with one comment

A thought occurred to me just now as I was browsing somebody else’s blog where we pretty much did the same exact thing but there was a major difference. That difference was: comments. We were at the same event at the same time probably separated by 2 or 3 rows a.k.a graduation. They had pictures, I had text. They have their own website, I have mine on an actual community based site connected with millions of people.

You would think that their blog would stand out more to others since it was hosted on its own site. It is unique compared to one blog against millions. However, according to Technorati, the blog in question has only a blog reaction of 5 while mine is at a 66 but a lot of that is because of the way Thomas works his site.

Before I continue, let me make one point clear. Technorati is not a reliable source of finding information, so all of this could be subjective.

They have not had a single comment since September, but my blog has had 281 comments since the beginning of September. Mind you that includes the comments I have written in response to other’s comments. For a personal blog, that is a lot. It is merely an observation of mine that blogs that lack a community and network, lack the comments and participation of people. My blog does not lack this.

However, I’m backed with Livejournal. I have their love and support, I hope. They have their own domain under dreamhost. Who has the higher advantage? To the untrained eye, one would see this other blog as superior. But look deeper, how many people are actually looking at it? How many people are actually interested? I’ve never heard of it until today when it was linked by somebody else.

Who’s got the better set up though? I rely on the services of a company while they rely on the services that they create themselves. I wish I didn’t have to rely on Livejournal, but I’m not cool like some people and happen to willy nilly have a domain lying around.

They’ve got content, but their content sure as hell isn’t attracting comments. In the end, what matters more, un-commentable content or commentable content?

*You get 10 points if you make a voice post saying “commentable content” 10 times fast!

I Sincerly Love Newspapers.

leave a comment »

Instead of studying, I’m worrying about the job of my favorite columnist at the Spokesman Review. They cut a couple columns due to budget and sent them to write feature stories. Which is better than sacking them, but still. That’s like telling me I can’t write my blog anymore, but….I can write film reviews for the rest of my life. Which could be okay, but I’d rather talk about photography and my imminent job search.

All is well though. I can’t wait to make it home and read my favorite column in the newspaper every day.

Back to studying. “When and where do we have evidence for the emergence of hominoidea?” *thinking pose*

P.S. Why do I feel like it’s my fault that newspapers nationwide are having budget problems?

Green Screen Challenge

with 40 comments

Lets play a neat little game called ‘who can put the best image behind me’ taking advantage of the fact that I’m posing in front of a green screen. However, there are rules. Keep it PG. Meanwhile, I shall sit here trying my darndest to study for my physical anthropology exam. Keep me amused and make a picture if you can.

EDIT: I originally deleted this because I thought it was dumb after 45 minutes but I guess people wanted it back up.

Avid Is the Light of My Life

with 7 comments

I just had a moment. I opened up Adobe Premiere Pro on my computer to start some editing. The sequence is open and I’m hitting the L button trying to select the red arrow. It was at that moment that I looked down at my keyboard and realized that the L button is just the L button and it was like waking up from a dream.

I was on a PC running Premiere. Not on a PC running Avid.

Winter Mixtape

leave a comment »

Here’s a mixtape I threw together for a certain awesome community. It is compiled of songs that to me represent winter in various forms. By various forms I mean it represents the actual physicality of winter and for some the philosophies, emotions and events that occur during the winter time. I believe this to be one of my most well put together mixes. I hope you enjoy!

Artists: Various Artists
Album: And Come The Winter Season (89 MB)
Genre: classical, celtic

1. New York Philharmonic – Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity (8:17)
2. Morten Lauridsen – O Magnum Mysterium (1997) (6:55)
3. Eric Whitacre – Lux aurumque (4:08)
4. Epsom Chamber Choir – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (2:29)
5. Ralph Vaughan Williams – Fantasia on Christmas Carols (11:43)
6. Robert Shaw & Robert Shaw Chamber Singers – In The Bleak Midwinter (3:42)
7. The Chieftains – The Bells Of Dublin/Christmas Eve (3:04)
8. Loreena McKennitt – Balulalow (3:12)
9. Kronos Quartet – Kronos Quartet – Samuel Barber , Adagio (7:38)
10. The Battlefield Band – Snow on the Hills/Xesus & Felisa (4:35)
11. George Winston – Skating (3:02)
12. George Winston – Night, Pt. 1: Snow (1:56)
13. George Fenton – From Pole To Pole: The Journey Of The Sun (3:27)

Change XX to TT!

About the cover art: That was taken in Idaho about 15 miles from my grandparents cabin. Beyond those mountains is Yellowstone National Park. Nothing better than a fine winter day out in those parts.
